Starting a Life in Rust


Once a player starts playing rust, a survivor is given a rock, a torch, and two bandages. The first mission (not an official mission but ia common goal) is to pass the first night. Rock is the first tool, and it can be used as gathering tools and weapon at the same time. The torch gives the player light when the night comes. Bandages are used for restoring health and stopping bleeding. The first objective is to find materials for building shelter and getting food.

A survivor must find wood to make a hatchet. Throwing a stone at a tree will give a player wood. However, it depletes too many calories. Survivor should play smart by looking around for a pile of wood on the ground instead. Next item in the list is stone. A rocky place will have plenty of stones. Once a player has 10 woods and 5 stones, he can craft a stone hatchet. This tool can be a hunting weapon and crafting tool.

Once the hatchet is done, a player needs food and shelter next just like in this survival guide. Animals can be killed to harvest meat, and skin. Unless survivor doesn’t have a hatchet yet, the original weapon for a starting survivor is the rock. Chickens and rabbits are easy to hunt. Once the meat is ready, don’t forget to gather animal skin for making cloth. 15 clothes can make a sleeping bag which is used to locate player’s respawn place after he dies.

Now the next mission is to build a campfire. Literally, all survivors can eat raw meat but it is not healthy. A raw meat can add to calories bar but it will deduct health. Setting a campfire can give player warmth and enables him to cook. Campfire requires 5 woods to craft. However, one wood will be consumed as a fuel for every minute. Cooking needs to be done fast in order to conserve wood. There are 3 choices for campfire when it is set: ignite, extinguish, and open. After the fire is ignited, select open to cook a meat. Then the meal is ready.

After the meal is finished, the next mission is to build a shelter. Wood shelter is the first house of a survivor in this wasteland. A shelter can protect residents from dangerous wildlife and attack from hostile humans. It requires 80 woods to make it. 50 woods are for the box and 30 woods will be taken as door. The door will protect an insider from basic weapons like rock or hatchet. Shelter and other building can be repaired. The needed items list will be shown in the hotbar key.

One thing to remember is all buildings will decay. Shelter has 12 hours lifetime and wood building has 24 hours. To reset the countdown, just open the door.

The last skill for beginner is furnace. It has the ability to melt down metal and get ore. Furnace can be used to make a weapon. The materials for requirement are 15 stones and 20 woods and low-grade fuel which is crafted by 2 animals and 1 cloth. A furnace can craft a high level weapon like a gun but it needs a blueprint. Blueprints can be acquired by a drop from airplane’s supply and corpses of dead bodies.

Last thing to remember is, don’t trust anyone. The best motto for Rust is everyman for himself. It is good to have allies, but in terms of survival, everyone might lure others to danger. They might make friends at first and then steal or rob another one’s supply. Don’t trust anybody especially someone with a gun.

What Players Can Do in Rust

The only purpose in Rust is to stay alive. All activity player will do is aimed at surviving. Let’s take a closer look at what people can do in this cruel world. In the last article, survivors already know the game mechanics. This part will introduce the activities players can do.


Getting Materials

Before doing anything, player needs to collect materials as an ingredient or to make tools for gathering stuff. Humans in Rust can get materials by their two hands but some items require tools. Some materials can use a single stone to get it.

What Players Can Get

  • Wood
    Wood is a basic resource to keep humans alive. It can be used to build a campfire, a house, a storage container, and so on. Players can acquire wood by cutting down a tree. Wood can be harvested by using a rock throwing at tree or cutting it with axe. Axe can produce more wood than rock.
    Wood can be found lying around anywhere.
  • Stone and Ore
    Stone is an elemental resource. It can be used as a tool or material of craft. Small stones can be lifted by human’s hands.
    Minerals can be picked when using blunt tools like a hatchet to hit the mineral rock several time.
    Once raw ore is picked, players need a furnace to melt down the ore for metal fragment.
  • Charcoal
    Charcoal is available in campfires when burning logs. It is an ingredient to make gunpowder when mixed with sulfur.
  • Food & Clothing
    Food is vital to survivor, as nobody will want to die starving. Food fills up calories bar, regenerates health, and reduces rad bar. Food can be gained in two ways. One is to scavenge canned food or ration. They are usually located in crates, looted bags, or dead players. Another way is to hunt for animals. Once the prey is dead, a hatchet is needed to harvest the meat. Raw meat needs to be cooked before having it. Actually, raw meat can fill up calories meter but it is not healthy. Consumer will get health deducted. Also skin can be applied as cloth which is important to survivability.



Crafting allows survivors to create items that will help them keep alive in this land.
To craft items is simple, just go to inventory panel and tick crafting. If the recipe known as the blueprint is learned, players can craft it immediately in case the material is sufficient. Players can select the amount he wants to craft. Blueprints can be found in crates, looted from player or rare animals. The blueprint is permanently learned even if the player will die.



Players can fight both wild creature or other players. It requires more caution when fighting players. A ranged weapon in this game such as a gun can kill people instantly in one shot.

Rust Game Mechanics.


Rust is a first person survival game developed and published by Facepunch Studios. It was inspired by zombie survival DayZ, and leading build game Minecraft. The only goal in Rust is to survive from the dangerous environment. All survivor need to keep living, gather foods, build the shelter, and protect himself from all threats.

Once a player enters Rust, he will have 3 items to make himself stay alive; rock, torch, and a few bandages. A new face needs to know the mechanics in this game and will have to be familiar with the status bar. There are 3 status indicating player’s status or survivability; Health, Calories, and Rad. This bar will be shown in the bottom right corner.

Health: Health is life point, and is the most important status. All life dies if health reaches 0. Health will be lost if the player is attacked by other players or wild creatures, falling from height, and poisoning thru radiation. Health can be restored by eating food and applying med kits.

Calories: Calories bar shows the energy of player. The more calories a player has, the more action a player can perform. If calories run low, the player will start starving. Starvation will gradually decreases health and players can die from starving.

Radiation: Radiation indicates how much the player absorbs the radiation. If the survivor gets too much radiation (500+), the player will get radiation poisoning. The disease will deplete health and cause player to die. The radiation rate can be decreased by staying away from affected zone and taking anti-radiation pills if the value is too much.

Cold effect is another factor that causes health reduction especially when at night. When the night arises and the layer has no cloth to wear, he will lose calories faster. To get rid of cold effect, players can do it in 2 ways. First, the survivor needs to be near the campfire. It will give the living one “comfort effect”. The warmth will keep player from losing calories faster. Also, the campfire gradually generates health for player. Second is to find a cloth to wear. Clothes can be looted from enemies or created.

Death: If a player’s health drops to 0, player cannot perform any function but the voice chat. In dying time, players can be revived or looted by other players. When a player is dead, his item will be dropped to the ground. Player has to choose his respawn place. Player can select to respawn at a random place or back to his sleeping bag or bed.
